When commissioning a bespoke ring, selecting the design and the gemstone is only part of the process. One of the most practical decisions you will make is choosing the right metal. At SIAMRINGTON, we frequently guide our clients in Bangkok through the nuances of gold purity.

There is no single "best" karat. The right choice depends entirely on your lifestyle, your budget, and how you plan to wear the piece. Here is a straightforward, objective breakdown of what each gold purity level offers.

Understanding Karats

Pure gold, in its natural state, is incredibly soft. To make it durable enough for jewelry, it is alloyed (mixed) with other metals like copper, silver, or zinc. The "Karat" (K) system measures the ratio of pure gold to these other metals out of 24 parts.

9K Gold (37.5% Gold): Maximum Durability
Because it contains a higher percentage of alloyed metals, 9K gold is highly scratch-resistant and durable. It is a practical, cost-effective choice for everyday fashion rings or heavier bands. However, the yellow tone is notably paler than higher karats, and it may tarnish slightly over time depending on the wearer's skin chemistry.

14K Gold (58.3% Gold): The Practical Middle Ground
14K is widely favored for its balance. It offers a warm, classic gold color while retaining enough hardness to withstand an active lifestyle. If you work with your hands or plan to wear your ring every day without taking it off, 14K is a highly reliable option for holding settings securely.

18K Gold (75% Gold): The Fine Jewelry Standard
18K gold is the traditional benchmark for high-end bespoke jewelry. It provides a rich, deep yellow color and is highly resistant to tarnishing. Because it contains less base metal, it is also a safer choice for those with sensitive skin. While it is slightly softer than 14K and may develop a natural patina of micro-scratches over time, it remains the preferred choice for engagement rings and heirloom pieces.

24K Gold (100% Gold): Pure Investment
24K gold is pure gold. It boasts a distinct, intense orange-yellow hue that is deeply valued in Thailand and broader Asian cultures, often purchased for investment or ceremonial purposes. However, it is extremely soft and malleable. We generally do not recommend 24K for daily-wear custom rings especially those set with gemstones as the metal can easily bend, risking the loss of the stone.

Making Your Decision

If your priority is a durable band for a highly active daily routine, 9K or 14K are excellent options. If you are designing an engagement ring or a piece that highlights traditional craftsmanship and unheated natural gemstones, 18K is the industry standard.
